What is endometrial cancer?

The uterus is a muscular organ that is located in the female pelvis. Inside a cavity, where the fetus will develop in cases of pregnancy, that is coated by a layer of tissue called endometrium. The endometrium is what experienced growth every month and regular landslides thus causing menstruation.

Endometrial cancer should, therefore, to changes in the cells that make up this tissue and eventually form a tumor within the uterine cavity. Do not confuse this type of cancer with cervical cancer (cervix), or any other disease of the uterus itself.

It is the most common malignant tumor of the female genital tract, and the average age is around 60 years, being particularly important in women who have stopped menstruating (menopause).

There are several types of endometrial cancer, the most frequent one histological type called Adenocarcinoma (over 90% of cases).

What are the causes of endometrial cancer?

The specific cause of why cells become malignant endometrium remains unknown. Yes we have identified some risk factors that may be related to the development of this disease, and that we will name now.

Appears to be related to obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Having children seems to reduce the risk of endometrial cancer. Treatment in postmenopausal women with estrogen in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is not because of this disease.

In women with breast cancer who take tamoxifen, there is also risk of eventually developing endometrial cancer.

What are the symptoms of endometrial cancer?

The most common symptom is vaginal bleeding. This bleeding will be different if the woman continues to menstruation or if you no longer presents. In premenopausal women, we find irregular periods, which occur earlier than usual, with more bleeding or spotting between rules, etc.. In postmenopausal women, the bleeding from the vagina, as a rule, or simply bloody spotting, you should review that you consult your gynecologist, as it may be the first symptom of endometrial cancer.

How is endometrial cancer diagnosed?

Endometrial Cancer Symptoms, Causes and Treatment!

Sometimes, after a gynecological, that is the result of cytologic atypia, this means that the doctor who has seen those cells observed microscopically features suspicious of malignancy in them. In these cases, it is necessary to conduct regular checks, since the probability of developing endometrial cancer is approximately 23% within four years before that finding.

Diagnostic procedures include inspection and sampling (cytology) performed in any routine gynecological visit. May be accompanied by an ultrasound, which can be seen in the endometrium strange images. But accurate diagnosis we give the analysis of an endometrial biopsy, which pinched a piece of tissue for microscopic study.

What is the treatment options for endometrial cancer?

Most women with this disease are treated with surgery, with removal of the uterus and both ovaries (hysterectomy plus oophorectomy).

Radiotherapy treatment can be applied as either externally or so endocavitaria (directly into the vagina). It is often used after surgery, and in some cases is the only type of treatment applied: very advanced tumors or cases where surgery is not appropriate or not possible.

The application of chemotherapeutic drugs is still under study and no data too enlightening. Similarly, neither hormone treatments give very clear results, yet in-depth studies are lacking long-term with these two types of treatment.

Prevent endometrial cancer - Prognosis

The prognosis is better as far as the diagnosis of the disease is as early as possible. Hence the importance of seeing a gynecologist for any unusual bleeding, especially menopausal, or other symptoms arising from the female genital tract.

With proper treatment, the survival figures to five years typically exceed 80% if the tumor is in the early stages.
